8th Grade Corona/Nicholson

Coach Mike Corona

Mike has been coaching youth and adult sport for over 10 years, finding success in the results of his athletes across many sports. Mike places immense value on the fundamentals of the game and more importantly, on mental and physical toughness. He ensures each player understands the true meaning of toughness and portrays it on and off the court. He believes the mental side of sport is an irreplaceable life skill. Though difficult to develop and often overlooked, it is rarely taught and simply expected, without instruction nor accountability.

Mike believes the declining level of respect and sportsmanship in today’s professional sports can be seen bleeding into youth sports. This carries over into the classroom and is ineffective at shaping the minds of our future leaders. For 99.5% of the kids playing AAU, the skills learned will either help or hurt them off the court; therefore, he places a high emphasis on the interrelated skills taught through sport that are used in life…respect, communication, body language, and mental toughness.

Mike has been coaching alongside Denny for the past year. Since inception under the Select brand, Mike and Denny are 19-2 during league and tournament play.

Mike is a Vice President and CFP® with Morgan Stanley in Syracuse, NY.  He resides in Jamesville with his wife Jennifer and 3 children; Aston, Carson and Cameron.

Coach Denny Nicholson

Denny grew up in Oswego, NY and played four years of varsity basketball at Bishop Cunningham High School leading the team to three consecutive sectional titles and state championship.  He completed his high school career as a First – Team All CNY selection, member of the CNY Empire State Games Team, and the second all-time leading scorer in Section III history amassing over 1,500 points.  He went on to play basketball at Nazareth College where he was a three year starter and helped the team to four consecutive post season appearances.  As a senior he served as captain of the team while setting a single season school record shooting 48% from three-point range.

Denny has been coaching at various levels from college to youth basketball for the past twenty years and especially enjoys sharing a love of basketball with young players who exude the same passion.  Denny works at Syracuse University as the Director of Undergraduate Recruiting and Admissions in the College of Arts and Sciences.  He and his wife, Lucille, have three children, Paige, Claire, and Joe and reside in East Syracuse.
